It's Teacher Appreciation Week, the perfect time to show the educators in your life just how much they matter. The national week, which is always the first week of May, started Monday, May 5 and will end Friday, May 9.

Teacher Appreciation Week 2025: When, what is it?

Teacher Appreciation Week has been around in the U.S. since 1986, but started as a single day in the 1950s.

“In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to set aside a day to recognize teachers. Back then, it was just a single day of recognition,” according to Teachers of Tomorrow.

Teacher Appreciation Day is always celebrated on the Tuesday of that week, which is May 6 this year.

Teacher Appreciation Day 2025

This year, Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week, which runs May 6 through May 12, fall on the same time and some businesses are celebrating both.

Both teachers and healthcare workers can sign up through May 13 to win a free burrito from Chipotle. 100,000 teachers and 100,000 healthcare workers will be randomly selected for a free burrito e-gift card. Read more...

Whataburger treats teachers with a free breakfast entrée for Teacher Appreciation Week

Whataburger offers teachers with a valid school ID a free breakfast menu item from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. May 5 through May 9.

Yes, Chick-fil-A usually celebrates Teacher Appreciation Day. But it’s up to each location’s owner to participate in appreciation day deals, so check to see how the location closest to you will be celebrating before you go. 

A participating restaurant in Lee Vista, near Orlando, is giving away a free item to teachers and nurses everyday between May 5 and May 12.
